| John Robert Barrett has been a graphic illustrator for over
Forty three years. Considered by many to be one of the foremost naval ship
illustrators in the world he is certainly the finest digital illustrator in
the field. He is the illustrator of the Tin Can Sailors series of data-type
books and other full-sized books by Robert F. Sumrall. He served in the U.S.
Navy between 1960 and 1963. Completing his recruit training at Great Lakes,
Illinois he was assigned to the Jacksonville Naval Air Station as a storekeeper.
Changing his rate to gunners mate, he finished his naval service aboard the
USS William R. Rush (DDR-714) home ported at Mayport, Florida. He studied
illustration during 1966 at the Famous Artists School in Westport, Connecticut,
a school founded by Norman Rockwell, and began his career as a graphic
illustrator upon completion. In 1970 he opened his own studio in Annapolis,
Maryland specializing commercial illustration. In 1981 he became the manager
of the Graphics Section for Black & Decker's International Household Products
Division. He began his freelance career as a naval illustrator in 1991. John
is a lifetime member of Tin Can Sailors, the National Association of Destroyer
Veterans. He has done numerous illustrations, maps, and charts for the TIN CAN
SAILOR, the quarterly publication of the National Association of Destroyer
